How We Rank Law Firms

Overview

TopLawyerFirms uses a proprietary 5-factor scoring model to evaluate law firms across the United States. Each firm is scored on a 10-point scale based on objective, verifiable data. Rankings are updated periodically to reflect new information, client feedback, and changes in firm performance.

Our goal is to provide users with an honest, data-driven assessment of which law firms are best equipped to handle their specific legal needs. We evaluate firms across 18+ practice areas and all 50 states, with scoring criteria weighted to reflect what matters most to clients.

The 5 Evaluation Criteria

1. Case Results & Verdicts

We assess a firm's track record of achieving favorable outcomes — including settlements, jury verdicts, and appeals. Firms that consistently recover significant compensation for clients or win complex cases score higher in this category. We verify results through court records, press releases, and firm disclosures.

Weight: 30%

2. Client Reviews & Satisfaction

We analyze verified client reviews from multiple platforms including Google Reviews, Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Justia. Volume, recency, and sentiment are all considered. We discount suspicious patterns (sudden spikes, templated language) to ensure integrity.

Weight: 25%

3. Peer Ratings & Recognition

Recognition by fellow attorneys and legal organizations is a strong signal of professional standing. We consider AV Preeminent ratings by Martindale-Hubbell, Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, and state bar leadership roles.

Weight: 20%

4. Legal Credentials & Education

We verify bar admissions, board certifications (e.g., National Board of Trial Advocacy), law school background, continuing legal education, and any disciplinary history. Clean bar records are required; substantiated complaints lower a firm's score.

Weight: 15%

5. Years of Experience & Specialization

Depth of experience in a specific practice area outweighs general tenure. A 10-year specialist in personal injury law scores higher than a 20-year generalist in that category. We also assess whether the firm's caseload reflects genuine specialization.

Rating Scale
