About Legacy Law Firm, P.C.
Legacy Law Firm Review – Estate Planning, Elder Law, Asset Protection & Business Planning Attorneys
Introduction
Legacy Law Firm, P.C., found online at LegacyLawFirmPC.com, is a Sioux Falls, South Dakota law firm focused on helping individuals, families, business owners, farmers, ranchers, professionals, and retirees protect wealth, plan for the future, and manage major life transitions. Unlike general-practice firms that divide their time among criminal defense, personal injury, divorce, and unrelated litigation, Legacy Law Firm concentrates its practice on estate planning, elder law, asset protection, business planning, real estate planning, probate, trust administration, and succession planning.
The firm's positioning is highly proactive. Rather than waiting for a legal dispute to arise, Legacy Law Firm helps clients put structures in place before problems occur. That may mean creating wills and trusts, protecting assets from long-term-care costs, preparing a business succession strategy, setting up a new company, transferring family property, or organizing an estate so that heirs can avoid unnecessary conflict later.
Legacy Law Firm is based in Sioux Falls but serves clients across a broader Midwestern region. The firm currently practices in South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and North Dakota.
A major part of the firm's philosophy is education. Its website repeatedly emphasizes that a good attorney should do more than simply prepare documents. The firm provides blogs, seminars, webinars, guides, FAQs, and other resources designed to help clients understand the decisions they are making.
This Legacy Law Firm review explains the firm's services, its areas of specialization, and the types of clients who may benefit most from working with its attorneys.

Planning after the death of a business owner
The firm states that it focuses exclusively on estate planning, elder law, and business planning rather than trying to operate as a general-practice law office.
Estate Planning Services
Estate planning is at the center of Legacy Law Firm's identity.
Estate planning involves deciding how assets should be managed during life, what happens if someone becomes incapacitated, and how property should pass after death.
A comprehensive estate plan can involve much more than preparing a simple will.
Legacy Law Firm helps clients create plans using tools such as:
-
Wills
-
Trusts
-
Powers of attorney
-
Healthcare planning documents
-
Asset protection structures
-
Tax planning
-
Beneficiary planning
The firm's attorneys work with clients ranging from young families creating their first estate plans to high-net-worth families looking to preserve multigenerational wealth.
The firm's approach is strongly customized. Rather than relying on standardized documents, its attorneys evaluate the client's family, assets, business interests, tax considerations, long-term-care concerns, and personal objectives.
Wills
Wills are one of the most fundamental estate-planning tools offered by Legacy Law Firm.
A will allows someone to specify how property should be distributed after death and can also address important family issues such as guardianship choices for minor children.
However, the firm's broader estate-planning philosophy makes clear that a will is only one component of a complete plan.
Depending on the client's circumstances, trusts, powers of attorney, tax strategies, and asset protection techniques may also be necessary.
Legacy Law Firm's estate-planning attorneys help clients understand how these documents work together rather than treating a will as a complete solution for every family.
Trust Planning
Trusts are another major service.
Trusts can potentially help clients:
-
Control how assets are distributed
-
Protect beneficiaries
-
Reduce probate exposure
-
Improve privacy
-
Preserve family wealth
-
Plan for incapacity
-
Address tax concerns
Attorney Louis Krabbenhoft, for example, focuses on estate planning, trust planning, probate avoidance, asset protection, and business succession. His practice includes helping families develop sophisticated strategies for multigenerational wealth protection.
Trust planning may be particularly valuable for clients with significant assets, family businesses, farms, investment property, special-needs beneficiaries, or complicated family circumstances.
Powers of Attorney
Legacy Law Firm also prepares powers of attorney.
These documents allow a trusted person to make certain financial or legal decisions if the client becomes unable to act independently.
This can be an important part of incapacity planning.
Without appropriate documents, families may face delays or court proceedings when trying to manage finances or make decisions on behalf of an incapacitated relative.
The firm's estate-planning practice therefore focuses not only on what happens after death but also on protecting clients during their lifetime.
Tax and Asset Protection Planning
Tax and asset protection planning is another important area of Legacy Law Firm's practice.
Asset protection planning involves structuring wealth so that families and business owners can reduce unnecessary risks and preserve assets for future needs.
This may involve estate-planning structures, business entities, trusts, and other legal techniques.
The firm's expertise page lists tax and asset protection planning as one of its principal family and money protection services.
For high-net-worth families, business owners, farmers, ranchers, and professionals, protecting assets can be just as important as determining who eventually inherits them.
Elder Law
Elder law is one of Legacy Law Firm's strongest specialties.
The firm helps seniors and families address legal and financial issues associated with aging.
Its elder law services include:
-
Long-term care planning
-
Medicaid planning
-
Nursing home asset protection
-
Estate planning
-
Asset protection
-
VA-related planning
Legacy Law Firm states that its elder law attorneys have extensive experience helping families preserve assets while planning for long-term-care costs.
This is particularly important because nursing home care can quickly become one of the largest expenses a family faces.
Medicaid Planning
Medicaid planning is a major component of the firm's elder law practice.
Long-term nursing care can be extremely expensive, and families sometimes assume they must spend nearly all their assets before any help becomes available.
Legacy Law Firm explains that Medicaid planning can be considerably more nuanced.
Its elder law attorneys help families understand eligibility rules, asset protection strategies, Medicaid recovery, and planning options before or even after someone enters a nursing facility.
The firm specifically warns that the common assumption that families simply need to "spend down" everything or wait out a five-year look-back period does not capture every possible planning option.
Nursing Home Asset Protection
Legacy Law Firm also focuses on protecting family assets from being unnecessarily depleted by long-term-care expenses.
This is particularly important for married couples.
When one spouse requires nursing home care, the financial consequences can potentially threaten the financial security of the spouse who remains at home.
The firm's elder law team creates customized plans intended to preserve options and protect family resources while complying with applicable Medicaid and long-term-care rules.
Elder Law Credentials
Professional specialization is one of Legacy Law Firm's notable strengths.
Attorney Bobbi Thury is the first Board-Certified Elder Law Attorney in South Dakota certified by the National Elder Law Foundation. She is also a Certified Dementia Practitioner, accredited by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and affiliated with organizations focused on elder and special-needs planning.
The firm has also described itself as the only South Dakota firm with a board-certified elder law attorney.
For clients dealing with Medicaid, dementia, long-term-care costs, or complicated elder law issues, this specialized background may be particularly valuable.
Special Needs Planning
Legacy Law Firm includes special needs planning among its family protection services.
Families with a disabled child or adult beneficiary may need specialized planning to provide financial support without unintentionally disrupting eligibility for government benefits.
Special needs planning can involve trusts and other structures designed to preserve assets while allowing the beneficiary to continue receiving qualifying public assistance.
The firm's combination of estate planning and elder law experience gives it a natural foundation for this type of work.
Business Planning
Business planning is another major pillar of Legacy Law Firm.
The firm represents entrepreneurs, established businesses, professionals, farmers, ranchers, and other business owners.
Its business services include:
-
Business formation
-
Startup planning
-
Business ventures
-
Asset protection
-
Tax planning
-
Corporate governance
-
Business transactions
-
Succession planning
-
Business transitions
-
Business exits
-
Employment law
This practice complements the firm's estate-planning work because many business owners need their company and personal planning strategies to work together.
Business Formation and Startups
Legacy Law Firm helps entrepreneurs establish new businesses.
Choosing the appropriate legal structure can affect liability, ownership, governance, taxes, and future growth.
The firm assists clients with business formations, startups, and ventures as part of its broader business success and protection practice.
For a new business owner, legal planning at the beginning can help prevent disputes and structural problems later.
Business Asset Protection
The firm's business practice also includes tax and asset protection planning.
Business owners may face risks connected to employees, customers, contracts, creditors, litigation, or ownership disputes.
Legacy Law Firm helps clients structure business and personal assets in ways designed to reduce unnecessary exposure while maintaining practical control over the enterprise.
Business Transactions and Governance
Legacy Law Firm also assists with business transactions and corporate governance.
Governance determines how a company is managed, how decisions are made, and what rights owners have.
Properly prepared agreements can be especially important in companies with multiple owners.
The firm's business attorneys help clients address these issues proactively rather than waiting for a disagreement to develop into litigation.
Business Succession Planning
Business succession planning is one of the firm's strongest business services.
Many closely held companies, farms, and family businesses face a difficult question: what happens when the current owner retires, becomes incapacitated, or dies?
Legacy Law Firm helps owners plan business succession, transitions, and exits.
A succession plan may involve transferring ownership to:
-
Children
-
Other family members
-
Business partners
-
Employees
-
Outside buyers
The appropriate strategy depends on taxes, business value, family relationships, ownership structure, and the owner's retirement goals.
Planning for Farmers and Ranchers
Legacy Law Firm specifically states that it has advised farmers and ranchers in addition to professionals, business owners, physicians, and families.
Farm and ranch succession can be particularly complicated because the family's wealth may be concentrated in land, equipment, livestock, and the operating business.
Estate planning, business succession, tax planning, and real estate planning may all need to work together.
This makes Legacy Law Firm's multidisciplinary planning approach particularly relevant to agricultural families.
Employment Law
Employment law is included within the firm's business success and protection services.
Attorney Danielle Ihler, for example, practices in estate planning, elder law, business planning, and employment law.
The firm's employment practice is primarily presented as part of its broader business-planning services rather than as a large employee-side litigation department.
This means business owners can potentially obtain advice regarding employment-related legal issues alongside their other corporate planning needs.
Real Estate Planning
Real estate law is another service offered by Legacy Law Firm.
Its current real estate practice includes:
-
Private real estate transactions
-
Family properties
-
Commercial real estate transactions
This service can be particularly useful when property ownership is connected to estate planning or business succession.
For example, a family may own farmland, rental properties, commercial buildings, or shared family real estate that needs to be transferred efficiently across generations.
Private Real Estate Transactions
Legacy Law Firm assists clients with private property transactions.
These matters may involve ownership transfers, agreements between family members, or other non-standard transactions requiring careful documentation.
Having estate planning and real estate services within the same firm can be useful when property is part of a larger wealth-transfer plan.
Family Property Planning
Family properties are specifically identified as a real estate service.
Shared family cabins, farms, ranches, vacation homes, and inherited properties can create difficult ownership questions.
Families may need to decide:
-
Who owns the property?
-
Who can use it?
-
Who pays expenses?
-
Can an owner sell their interest?
-
What happens after an owner's death?
Planning ahead can reduce the risk of later disputes between siblings, cousins, and future generations.
Commercial Real Estate Transactions
Legacy Law Firm also handles commercial real estate transactions.
Businesses often own or lease substantial property, and legal planning may need to coordinate with company ownership, financing, taxation, and succession.
The firm's combined business and real estate planning experience can be particularly valuable in these situations.
Probate and Estate Administration
Legacy Law Firm assists families after a loved one dies through its probate and estate administration practice.
Probate is the legal process used to administer certain estates, resolve obligations, and transfer assets to beneficiaries.
The firm's services include:
-
Probate
-
Estate administration
-
Trust administration
-
Planning after the death of a business owner
This allows the firm to help families both before and after a death.
Trust Administration
Trust administration is another significant service.
When someone who created a trust dies or becomes incapacitated, the trustee may need legal guidance carrying out the trust's instructions.
Responsibilities may involve identifying assets, communicating with beneficiaries, distributing property, addressing taxes, and complying with trust terms.
Legacy Law Firm helps trustees and families navigate this process.
Death of a Business Owner
One especially useful service is planning and administration following the death of a business owner.
This situation can create immediate uncertainty regarding ownership, operations, employees, customers, and finances.
Because Legacy Law Firm handles estate administration and business succession, it can address both the personal estate and the future of the company.
Guardianships and Conservatorships
Individual attorney experience at Legacy Law Firm also includes guardianships and conservatorships.
Attorney Alex Hoffman, for example, practices in estate planning, business planning, elder law, estate administration, and guardianships and conservatorships.
These proceedings may become necessary when someone can no longer manage personal or financial matters independently and no adequate planning documents are already in place.
Educational Approach
One of Legacy Law Firm's strongest branding themes is education.
The firm offers:
-
Blog articles
-
Seminars
-
Webinars
-
Guides
-
FAQs
-
Resources for professional advisors
This reflects the firm's view that clients should understand why a particular planning strategy is being recommended rather than simply signing documents they do not fully understand.
From a review perspective, this can be especially valuable in estate and elder law because many strategies involve complicated financial and tax consequences.
Experienced and Specialized Attorneys
Legacy Law Firm emphasizes specialization rather than general practice.
Its purpose and values page argues that important estate, elder law, and business issues should be handled by lawyers who focus specifically on those fields.
Co-founder and Co-CEO Jayna Voss has practiced since 1995 and focuses on long-term development of the firm's planning services. Her professional recognition includes an AV Preeminent peer rating, Great Plains Super Lawyers recognition, and inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America for trusts and estates.
Bobbi Thury brings specialized elder-law credentials, while other attorneys focus on estate planning, business planning, administration, employment law, and related areas.
Client Service Philosophy
Legacy Law Firm's stated values are:
-
Integrity
-
Excellence
-
Positivity
-
Stewardship
The firm's client reviews frequently emphasize professionalism, responsiveness, listening, and timely work.
This service model fits the nature of estate and elder law, where attorney-client relationships may continue for many years as family circumstances, laws, businesses, and assets change.
Free Initial Consultation
Legacy Law Firm offers a free phone consultation or initial meeting to assess a prospective client's situation.
This allows families and business owners to discuss their needs before deciding whether to proceed with a complete planning engagement.
Multi-State Midwest Coverage
Although headquartered in Sioux Falls, Legacy Law Firm currently serves clients in:
-
South Dakota
-
Iowa
-
Minnesota
-
Nebraska
-
North Dakota
This regional presence is particularly useful for families with property, businesses, farms, or relatives spread across several Midwestern states.
Strengths of Legacy Law Firm
Legacy Law Firm's greatest strength is specialization.
The firm does not attempt to handle every type of legal problem. Instead, it focuses on planning-related areas that naturally work together.
Its strongest capabilities include:
-
Estate planning
-
Wills and trusts
-
Elder law
-
Medicaid planning
-
Nursing home protection
-
Asset protection

Special needs planning

Business formation
-
Business succession

-
Real estate planning
-
Probate and estate administration
-
Trust administration
-
Multi-generational wealth planning
-
Specialized elder-law credentials
-
Services for farmers, ranchers, business owners, physicians, and families
Potential Limitations
Legacy Law Firm's specialization also defines its limits.
Someone seeking criminal defense, personal injury representation, divorce litigation, immigration services, bankruptcy, or unrelated courtroom litigation would generally need another law firm.
The firm's identity is centered on proactive estate, elder, and business planning rather than adversarial litigation.
Its geographic focus is also primarily the five Midwestern states in which it currently practices.

Final Verdict
Legacy Law Firm, P.C. is a specialized Sioux Falls estate planning, elder law, asset protection, and business planning firm serving clients throughout South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and North Dakota.
The firm's primary strength is the way its practice areas complement one another. Legacy Law Firm brings these services together rather than treating them as separate legal problems.
Its elder law capabilities are particularly noteworthy. The firm includes South Dakota's first board-certified Elder Law Attorney and provides specialized long-term-care, nursing-home, Medicaid, VA, and asset-protection planning.
The business side of the practice is equally comprehensive, covering startups, business formations, transactions, governance, succession, transitions, exits, employment issues, and commercial real estate.
The firm's emphasis on education is another advantage. Blogs, webinars, seminars, guides, and FAQs are used to help clients understand complex planning choices before making decisions.

"We absolutely highly recommend working with Legacy Law Firm. We used the firm to help my parents in law getting set up for medicaid without losing everything, since they have not plant ahead off time for this situation. Estate planning ensures that you and your loved ones are cared for in the manner that you want at a time when you can’t express your wishes because you are incapacitated or have passed away. Estate planning involves techniques and tools to minimize or eliminate costs, expenses, and taxes for your loved ones. We can help keep your family from getting bogged down in the court system, protect your children’s inheritance in case they get a divorce or go through a lawsuit, and protect a surviving spouse from a predatory marriage. Estate planning gives you the power to protect your family, even when you can’t be there for them. Good estate planning will also make it easier on your loved ones when you pass away and make sure they aren’t left with a mess at the worst time possible. The documents commonly used when doing estate planning are a durable power of attorney for financial affairs, a power of attorney for healthcare, a living will, HIPAA authorization, a last will and testament, and sometimes things like trusts or transfer on death deeds may be used to help accomplish goals.
Yes! Your age or wealth is not a deciding factor. Everyone over the age of 18 should have a power of attorney for healthcare and a durable power of attorney for financial affairs in place to make sure that if you are ever in an accident or a health situation hits, things can be handled and you are taken care of the way you want. If you have young children, you should have a Last Will and Testament in place and a trust to make sure your children will be taken care of and money spent the way you want on your children. If you are in retirement and worried about long-term care costs, elder law planning should be incorporated into your planning to make sure your nest egg is protected. Whether you are just starting out, entering your retirement years, recently divorced or married, or recovering from an illness, everyone should have some planning!
If your child is 18 years or older, they are a legal adult and it may be difficult or impossible for you to help them with financial affairs or even receiving health care information. Every adult should have a durable financial power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney and HIPAA authorization. These documents will make sure parents or other trusted people can assist if ever needed. If you have minor children, you need to do your estate plan and take care of your children under your planning. It is critical that you are doing estate planning so that they are taken care of if you can no longer be there to take care of them. There is no greater reason to do estate planning than to take care of children.
A Last Will and Testament (or Will) is a death document. This provides the instructions of who you want to handle things and where you want things to go upon your death. You can include a guardian for minor children, trusts for children or spouses, and much more. A Living Will is a medical document regarding life sustaining treatment measures that can instruct your healthcare providers how you want your medical treatment handled if you cannot express your wishes yourself.
A revocable living trust offers many benefits! Assets owned by the trust are not subject to probate, and instead, pass directly to the beneficiaries according to the terms you place in the trust. Trusts are private family entities so you do not need to do any annual reports to the state nor do you have to publish any notices when you pass away. Revocable living trusts often make it easier on the family and offer lifetime benefits as well for the people who establish the trust.
An irrevocable trust is often used for protection. Some irrevocable trusts, such as a spousal lifetime access trust, a domestic asset protection trust, a dynasty trust, or a life insurance trust are often used to protect from taxes. A supplemental needs trust or a special needs trust is used to protect from the government so that the beneficiary may continue to be eligible to receive government benefits without having to spend the trust assets down. A Medicaid asset protection trust is used to protect from the nursing home. An inheritance protection trust can be used if you are worried a child might go through a divorce to protect the inheritance you want to leave them or just want to make sure assets are protected for children and able to then pass down to grandchildren. These are only some of the many tools and techniques an estate planner has to accomplish protection goals. However, if you want an irrevocable trust, it is critical that you do it right. You don’t want a lockbox that you can’t access or make changes to, or worse yet, doesn’t even meet your goals when the rubber meets the road because something wasn’t done correctly. When done correctly, irrevocable trusts can protect what matters most, help you with taxes, and keep your life easy!
Elder law planning is the planning done for long-term care as we age. Specifically, we focus on asset protection planning for when, not if, a long-term care event strikes. Even if someone is in a nursing home, it’s not too late to do asset protection planning.
Business planning from the legal side includes everything from business formation for a startup, protecting and increasing value through solid contracts, employee training, and monetizing intellectual property, to business succession planning and transitions. While business owners are inarguably smart and capable people who like to get stuff done and often are doing things themselves, our business attorneys and tax attorneys can help navigate the ever-increasing tax and legal requirements of running a business, and help make sure what you have built stays protected from lawsuits and minimizes taxes. We believe good business planning helps build your business and private wealth up and protects it so it can’t be torn down, especially by other lawyers or the IRS.
America is a system, whether you like it or not, and the attorney you choose can make all the difference in making sure you are keeping the most in your pocket and legally protecting your loved ones and what you have built. While we are no medical doctors, in our areas of practice we are helping protect the things and the people who matter most to you – the heart of what makes living worthwhile. It is critical you choose a qualified, experienced and credentialed attorney who cares about taking care of you. It is also important that your attorney can plan holistically. You don’t want to lose out on tax advantages because you didn’t properly incorporate good tax planning into your estate or business planning. You also don’t want to leave something on the table that you were entitled to, such as government benefits. Most importantly, if you can protect yourself and your loved ones from a lawsuit, whether it’s a divorce, wrongful action, or car accident, you don’t want to miss asset protection opportunities because you were never advised that you could even do that. Make sure you vet your attorney. For example, if it’s asset protection from nursing home costs you are seeking, ask that attorney how much of your assets they can protect, how many Medicaid applications they have filed in the last month and how many of their applications have been approved, or whether their trusts have passed recent scrutiny from DSS or DHS depending on the state. You should be able to ask your attorney specific questions and they get specific answers back to you. Make sure you also check their credentials. If they say they are a specialist, then that means they have gone through board-certification by an ABA approved organization to receive such a designation. Ask them what board-certification they have received to be authorized to use a specialist designation. At Legacy Law Firm, we do have specialists, the credentials, the experience, and we care about taking care of our clients. We would be honored to help you.
